Is the National Down Syndrome Congress yearly convention worth it?
It is absolutely worth it!
I have only been to three. For many years I was unable to go because of “life just happening to us”. But to be honest, I wasn’t sure I needed it or maybe unconsciously I wasn’t sure I wanted to be in a group with hundreds and hundreds of people connected with Down syndrome. Some residue resistance to fully embracing that we are really in Club 21. Yet, truth be told, at these conventions I have learned so much, met amazing people, had to face some of my fears, found courage, got a thousand resources and help and ultimately gave thanks for the life I have been given because of Molly. While there, I have had many “ah ha” moments that have been transformational. For example, last year, I was by myself sitting, having a glass of wine and taking in all that was around me. As I sat I saw brand new mothers with their babies and everyone just ooing and ahhing over them. I watched as their shell shocked faces melted into relief and pride in the beauty of their child. A young couple with DS was coming down the escalator, hugging and giggling. I felt my heart just leap – hoping that one day Molly will experience that romance in her life. Then I saw a couple who had their 20 something daughter with them. They were trying to go up the escalator, and she flatly refused to go. She was terrified. I watched as her parents tried patiently to encourage her to go on and then slowly, lose their patience, embarrassed and then just mad. I saw me in them. I have discovered this common humanity that is unique to us with children who have DS. This last year, I finally felt like I had come home to myself while I was there. I belonged to this group. I was home. I am forever in Club 21. So… as you make plans for the summer, just take a moment to see if you can get to Boston and meet amazing people, like yourself, and enjoy this rest stop on your journey
