Monica Borquez

My name is Monica Borquez, and I'm mom to three great kids. Laura is 13, Becca's 10, and Tim is 9. Before kids I was a dental hygienist, and while I loved my job back then, I love this one more.

When Tim was born with Down syndrome I remember crying and apologizing to my husband, Fred. He wanted to know why I was sorry, and when I responded with "I wanted a son to be a plumber with you and work on old cars with you," he said a very simple "Who says he won't?" I have come to the realization our kids can and will succeed if they want and we learn to show them how.

As a volunteer with Club 21, I am learning the how and reaching out to others who are believing in our kids potential. It is gratifying to be meeting so many wonderful families and to share our experience, strength and hope. Come join us.

When I was a little girl (7), I wanted to read and learn and be smart like my big brother.  In fact, I recall where I was when I learned the word “important”.  I thought I was smart because I knew that BIG word.

I am volunteering my time to Club 21 because I think my daughter, Tara, who is now 13 years old, looks up to her 12 year old brother.  He is her hero.  I would love for her to read this one day and understand that she is my hero.  That is what makes Club 21 “important” to me.

Club 21 is nothing short of an amazing dream that has finally come true. There is nothing I want to happen more than this. I have known the Litteken family all my life and I am so, so, so thankful for that. I have been so blessed to see Molly grow up and become such a smart and funny and beautiful girl who I believe has truly taught me more lessons than anyone else.

This year in science class I chose to do a report on Down Syndrome. I studied the history as well as the science behind Down syndrome, and I learned so much. I was extremely surprised to find out how wrong people with Down syndrome have been treated in the past. It was only about fifty years ago that families that birthed children with Down syndrome would send them away to special institutions. This breaks my heart because I know that there is something to learn from everyone.

These kids have so much potential, but society just doesn't give them a chance. And that is why I want to help in any way with Club 21. Club 21 can be a place where these kids can find people who believe in them. People so often forget that kids with Down syndrome are kids too that want the same as anyone else. They want to be loved and supported and believed in. I want to help with this process that will not only change these kids lives but will and already has changed mine.
